Health Highlights: March 4, 2008Cost Saving Program Doesn’t Work in Heart Procedures, Study Says This article summarizes the results of Vivian Ho’s study which was published in the International Journal of Health Care Finance and Economics. Her article on Certificate of Need found that regulation resulted in small mortality benefits for open heart surgery but no benefit for angioplasty patients. Ho also found that Certificate of Need unintentionally resulted in an excess number of angioplasties performed; which decreased the average cost per cardiac intervention but raised overall expenditures.
